Known for their artful and gorgeous lyrics which delve into extraordinary loss, love and lightness, these three remarkable chanteuses will share their talents together on International Women’s Day.
On March 8, Christa Couture, Sarah Jickling and Kristina Shelden will perform a very special concert at The Cultch in East Vancouver. With vulnerable, intimate and exquisite songwriting serving as the foundation of the event, Luminescence: Chanteuse to the Power of Three aims to unearth the realities of living with a disability, leaving audiences emboldened, spirited and changed.

Winner of the 2008 Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Folk Acoustic Album, Christa Couture has built a reputation for transforming tragedy into musical triumph. Perhaps the greatest recognition of Christa’s talent and perseverance, however, came in 2014 when fans and friends rallied to raise more than $25,000 to purchase her a high-tech microprocessor knee for her prosthetic leg – making it easier for her to take her art on the road.
Sarah Jickling’s solo project pairs the unbridled emotion of her voice with synths and loops, and graduates lyrically from high school daydreams to honest accounts of a chaotic young adulthood. Sarah’s performances are intimate and raw, and she is more candid than ever about her ongoing struggle with debilitating anxiety and bipolar disorder. Sarah has become a local advocate for mental health awareness, and has opened up about her mental illness on radio, local television, podcasts, blogs and at live speaking events.
Kristina Shelden started performing at an early age in choirs, musicals, and jazz bands. After putting herself through a year of basic musicianship in college, however, she suffered a c4/c5 spinal cord injury that threatened to end her advancing musical ambitions. Through hard work and determination, she is now performing at venues throughout the city and has joined the board of directors for the Vancouver Adapted Music Society.
